Race Report: 31st Davao Finishers Marathon (Dec. 7, 2014)

As my year-ender major race, I joined the 31st Davao Finishers Marathon last December 7, 2014 in Davao City. Despite the lack of preparation, I registered for 42K just to fulfill my goal of running at least one marathon a year.

DFM 2014 was scheduled a week before Pryce Gas International Marathon in Cagayan de Oro. Though CDO is nearer to my hometown Malaybalay (Bukidnon) than Davao City, I chose to run in DFM due to the following reasons: (1) DFM is actually Mindanao’s longest running marathon event.  It is now on its 31styear and is only 7 years younger than the National Milo Marathon; (2) it will be my first time to run in Davao City; and (3) Ggun start is at 12 midnight which is favorable to slow runners like me who hate running under the harsh rays of the sun.

Two Weekends, Three Races

November was a busy one in terms of running for me. As I have decided that I will run 42K the following month in Davao City, I have only this month to train for the full marathon distance. As part of my preparation, I joined three races on two weekends:

November 9, 2014 - 38th Milo Marathon Cagayan de Oro

I prepared for this race for about two months in hope of finally improving my 21K PR of 2:13:30 which was set three years ago during Unilab's Run United also in CDO. It has been an endless 21K heartbreaks for me since then as, due to lack of consistent training, I failed to improve my time in the succeeding half-marathons that I've joined. For this year's Milo Marathon, I still wasn't able to train consistently. My longest long run was only up to 18K and I wasn't able to run two weeks before the race because Malou and I went to Palawan to celebrate our wedding anniversary. But since I was able to do some speed and hill works and tempo runs during weekdays, I think I was better prepared for this one than the previous years.

The 6th Tri 30+ Run Trail Edition was successfully held last Saturday, October 4, 2014 in Malaybalay City, Bukidnon. 6th Tri 30+ Run Trail Edition: October 4, 2014 (Malaybalay City, Bukidnon)

Tri 30+ Run, Malaybalay City's longest running run-for-a-cause series, will have its 6th edition this coming October 4, 2014. This is probably the most exciting edition of Tri 30+ as the 30-kilometer (more or less) route will pass along the Big Rock Trail in Sitio Caleb, Can-ayan. The Big Rock is a favorite training ground of Malaybalay's elite runners due to its challenging terrain. It features an uphill stretch of almost 3 kilometers with an elevation of more than 3,000 feet ASL. This route also offers the jaw-dropping view of verdant rolling hills and mountains which will make the run literally and figuratively breathtaking.

Tri 30+ Run is organized by Father Robert Selecios, a running and biking enthusiasts. This non-competitive race has helped various organizations in the past as 100% of the net proceeds from registration fees are donated to charitable causes. It also served as a regular gathering of runners from Malaybalay and neighboring places as they run not to compete with each other but to simply relish the joy of running with each other while enjoying the route.

3rd Impasug-ong Half Marathon: Running in Bukidnon's Land Down Under

A few years ago the Municipality of Impasug-ong became famous due to the movie Land Down Under (retitled to Love Me Again), starring Angel Locsin and Piolo Pascual, which was partly filmed here. Impasug-ong's stunning vista of verdant rolling hills and mountains was the perfect setting for the movie's cowboy theme. That is also accentuated by the fact that municipality is known as "Home of the Country's Finest Cowboys"

Last Sunday, September 7, 2014, I joined the 3rd Impasug-ong Half Marathon and 4th Invitational Fun Run. The race is part of the Araw ng Impasug-ong festivities. I am supposed to join only the 10K category since I am coming off an injury which sidelined my running for almost 2 weeks. The prodding of my officemate, however, convinced me to take on the half mary challenge. Despite the lack of requisite long runs and knowing fully the route's (very) challenging terrain, I told myself to just make this race a kickstart of my training for the Milo Marathon Cagayan de Oro Leg in November.

Running Places: My Top 6 Favorites

My passion for traveling goes well with my love for running. I love to explore new places just as much as I love to pound roads and trails with my running shoes. It has been said that the best way to discover a place is to explore it on foot. So whenever I am in a new place, I try to find time to explore its nooks and crannies by running around.

Listed below are the top 6 favorite places where I have ran. These are culled from my various experiences in travel and running for more than three years now:

Back to the Big Rock

In preparation for the upcoming LIONS 2014 Eco Run, we went for a long run to the Big Rock in Sitio Caleb, Can-ayan, Malaybalay City. The Big Rock is a favorite route of hardcore Malaybalay Runners due to its challenging terrain (2 km ++ of straight uphill stretch) and breathtaking views that can be seen along the way. Distance from the Capitol Grounds to the Big Rock is approximately 9 kilometers and elevation is at 946 meters above sea level. This is my second time to run to this spot and I definitely would want to go back here again and again.
