Malaybalay City: Long Run to BFI Tower 1

We ran along the BFI (Bukidnon Forest Inc.) dirt road for the second straight Saturday last December 21, 2013. This time, our goal was to go beyond our previous turning point at Hernandez Farm in Barangay Kalasungay and run farther toward the BFI Tower. I was with couple James and Blessie Paulican. Our route started similar to the previous weekend run, we met up at the corner of Rubin and CM Recto streets, followed the road going to Barangay Can-ayan and made a left turn upon reaching Malaybalay City Swimming Pool where the BFI fire road starts.

Malaybalay City: Running and Exploring at BFI Road

Last Saturday morning (December 16, 2013), I and my wife Malou, our couple friends James and Blessie and my officemate Edward went out for a long run. We agreed to take on the Bukidnon Forests Incorporated (BFI) trail via the Malaybalay City Swimming Pool which is situated along the road going to Barangay Can-ayan. I never passed the BFI route before so I got excited with what this trail has to offer.

Run Report: 5th Osvaldo Memorial Trail Run (Nov. 17, 2013)

The 5th Osvaldo Memorial Trail Run was held last Sunday, November 27, 2013 in Quadra Eco Resort, Sumpong, Malaybalay City. The run was organized by Dr. Rachito Abellanosa and his wife Maam Maite to commemorate the 7th death anniversary of their late son Osvaldo. Event distances were 5K and 10K and race route followed the road going to Barangay Can-ayan. The race was dubbed as purely fun run and runners were encouraged not only to beat their own PR but also to enjoy the route and each other's company.

I opted to run only 5K as I already ran 10K in the Kisolon Fiesta Run 2013 which happened the day before Osvaldo Run. Also, I had a bad case of hangover caused by a drinking binge with my friends on the eve before the race (hahaha!).

Malou went on to finish the 10K route where she placed third in the women's category. She won a cool Nathan running shirt for her effort.

After the race, running and outdoor goodies were raffled to all participants. I won a sling pouch while Malou got a Columbia singlet. Other prizes given away include running vests, dri fit long sleeves, sandals, casual shoes, bags, Uniliver products and a pair of Hoka ultra running shoes (!).

Since all participants won in the raffle, everybody went home happy and satisfied.

All photos from my master photographer friends who covered the event:  Bonzenti Panganiban (www.contourblog.com) of Bonzenti FOTOGRAFI and Makoy Lopez.

Run Report and Photos: Kisolon Fiesta Run 2013

I ran 10K in the Kisolon Fiesta Run 2013 last Saturday, Nov. 16, 2013 at Kisolon, Sumilao, Bukidnon. The run was part of the activities of the upcoming town fiesta. Other categories of the run were 2K and 5K. The run was organized by my friend, newly-elected Municipal Councilor George Jeremy "Jim" Baula. Accordingly, 25 pesos of every registration fee will be used to partially finance the construction the Christ the King Church altar.

These are some of the photos I took before, during and after the run. Photos are of inferior quality since I only used my Cherry Mobile Flare phone.

37th Milo Marathon Cagayan de Oro: We Made it Through the Rain!

(Photo from Circle Productions Inc and Studio 8)

For this year's 37th National Milo Marathon in Cagayan de Oro, I set aside my goal of setting a 21K PR. Instead I focus on helping my running buddy (a.k.a. as my wife) Malou make it to the finisher's medal cut-off time of 2 hours and 30 minutes.

To make it safely to the cut-off, I set a target pace of 7 minutes/kilometer. While Malou could easily hit this pace in 5Ks and 10ks, we still have to find out if she can maintain it for 21 kilometers. To make it more manageable, I told her to mentally divide the half-mary distance into four parts: 5K, 10.5K, 16K and finally the finish line. Our target is to reach 5K in 35 minutes, the turning point in 1:13:30, 16K in 1:52  and the finish line in 2:27, or three minutes before the cut-off time. But as always, due to family and work obligations, we find it hard to train consistently.

Running in Taguanao Diversion Road (Cagayan de Oro City)

Malou and I had the opportunity to run in Taguanao Diversion Road in Cagayan de Oro when we joined the 10-mile categeory of the 2nd PAF Run for Service last July 7, 2013. Taguanao, also known as South Diversion Road, connects Upper Macasandig to the former Airport Road going to Lumbia. It is considered as the alternate airport road when Lumbia Airport was still in operation.

Destination Run: Lorega, Kitaotao, Bukidnon

Lorega, a barangay of the Municipality of Kitaotao, is situated along the Bukidnon to Davao highway (also  known as BUDA). This barangay is known for its quarantine stop-over ("kwarantinas") where commuters have to stop and step on a foot bath to protect Bukidnon's livestock industry.

Elevated at 4,000 feet above sea level and with pine trees planted everywhere, the weather here is naturally cold. Malou and I spent two days and one night here last Holy Week just to get a feel on how it is to live in what could be considered as the Baguio version of Bukidnon.

Rave Running in the Northern Edge of Luzon

My passion for running is equaled only by my passion for travel. I love going to places not just to see the popular attractions but also to discover the local folks' way of living, culture and food. And whenever I'm new to a certain place, I always look for the opportunity to run around it. One of the best way to know more about a certain destination is to explore it by foot. And by running around, I don't only discover more of the place, I also get to do my maintenance run at the same time.

This year, my wife and I are fortunate to have traveled to the northern provinces of Luzon: Ilocos Norte and Cagayan Province. We took days off from our respective work to discover these beautiful places that are way too far from home. The long travel, however, did not stopped my itchy soles from running around these three places:

1. Claveria Beach in Claveria, Cagayan:

Not to be confused with the Misamis Oriental town of the same name, Claveria in Cagayan Province is one of those off-the-beaten places not often frequented by tourists. It can be reached after passing through the coastal municipalities of Ilocos Norte. Situated in the northernmost tip of mainland Luzon, Claveria is home to beautiful beaches and secluded coves with interesting rock formations.

Run Report: Cebu City Marathon 2013

I joined the Cebu City Marathon 2013 held last Sunday, January 13 in the Queen City of the South. It was my third straight year to join Cebu's biggest foot race, considered as one of the best organized in the country. My first time to join the CCM was in 2011 when I ran 5K and last year when I finished my first full marathon

Initially, I planned to skip this year's edition of CCM. My wife and I will be traveling next month to Luzon and we thought that we will just save our money for that trip. Luckily, I won a free registration courtesy of runroo.com's photo contest. Then a Cebu-based friend told me that I could sleep over at their apartment the night before the race. And fate must have conspired as the day after I won the free CCM race kit, I was able to book a round trip plane ticket to Cebu for only P1,400.00 through  Cebu Pacific's promo fares. So on the early morning of January 13, I found myself making my way to the 21K starting line in IT Park, Lahug.

High Altitude Running in Dahilayan

Dahilayan Adventure Park is undoubtedly Bukidnon's most famous tourist destination. The park, located in Dahilayan, Manolo Fortich, is famous for its 840-meter dual zip line, cool weather, scenic mountain view and a variety of fun rides perfectly suited for thrill-seeking tourists. When our company held its Wellness Program and Christmas Party in Dahilayan last month, it gave me the rare opportunity to not only stay overnight inside the park for free but also to run on its beautiful trail.
