Run Report: Pryce Gas International Marathon 2012 in Cagayan de Oro

The first Pryce Gas International Marathon was held last December 2, 2012 in Cagayan de Oro City. It has 3 distance categories: 42K, 21K and 5K. Instead of going for my third full marathon finish this year, I decided to run along with my wife Malou for her first 21K. It was also my first back-to-back 21K weekends having ran the half-mary in the 36th Milo Marathon CDO exactly a week before the Pryce Gas International Marathon.

The race start and finish area was in Pryce Gardens, a memorial garden about 8 kilometers from Grand City Hotel in Divisoria where we stayed the night before the race. Good thing the organizer provided shuttle vans with pick up point in Rodelsa Circle. Going up to Pryce Gardens, we already met the 42K runners on the road. 42K gun start was fired at 4 AM while 21K would kick off an hour later.

Pulaguy in Cebu City Marathon 2013!!!

The photo shown below won me a free 21K race kit to the Cebu City Marathon 2013 which will  be held on January 13, 2013 in the Queen City of South. I won the free registration courtesy of the Cebu-based running website http://runroo.com. Runroo held an online contest wherein they asked their readers to submit photos of their running grounds.

My winning entry! Who wouldn't love to run in this place?

Ten free race kits to the Cebu City Marathon 2013 were up for grabs for the photos with the most number of Facebook "likes", tweets, comments and shares. Though I did not make to the top 10 most number of likes, the people behind Runroo were kind enough to award me the "Early Bird" prize, being the first to send an entry from outside Cebu. Alright!!!!

Run Report: The 36th Milo Marathon in Cagayan de Oro

I joined the 36th National Milo Marathon in Cagayan de Oro last November 25, 2012 with the intention of improving my previous half-marathon best time of 2:13++. It was a time I established during the Run United Cagayan de Oro leg almost exactly one year ago. But even before I started running my third Milo race, I was having doubt if I could do a PR. Prior to this run, my training has been 99% LSD (long slow distance). I have been training with my wife, Malou, for one month in preparation for her first 21K which would happen exactly a week after this Milo Marathon.

The Kisolon Fiesta Run 2012 Experience

Despite the early morning rain, more than a hundred runners showed up and joined the Kisolon Fiesta Run 2012 in Kisolon, Sumilao, Bukidnon last Saturday, November 17. Organized by my friend, Kag. George Jeremy "Jim" Baula, the run was part of Barangay Kisolon fiesta activities. It was actually my third time to run in this town. The 1st Sumilao Fun Run last June was my first while the Tri 30+ SPED Run last September was the second.

Pulaguy in Camiguin (The Lanzones Festival Run Experience)

Last October 21, I together with my wife Malou and our couple friends James and Blessie joined the 2nd Gov. JJ Lanzones Festival Run 2012 in the Island Province of Camiguin. Though I have been to Camiguin a few times before, it was my first time to run in the the Island Born of Fire and I could say that the experience was truly unforgettable.

We checked in at GV Hotel a day before the race, a very convenient stay since it is only a few steps away from the Provincial Plaza of Mambajao, the assembly area and finish line of the race. At about 4 AM on the race day, 33K and 21K runners assembled at the plaza and then boarded the bus which took us to our respective starting areas. James and I joined the 21K category and we were dropped off in Guinsiliban while the 33K participants were taken farther to the town of Sagay. Both categories then promptly started simlutaneously at 5 AM.

Dole District C Fun Run: A Tough 5K Run in Lantapan

I joined the Dole District C Fun Run held in Poblacion, Lantapan, Bukidnon last September 8, 2012. It was just a 5K run but the reason I joined is to experience running in Lantapan for the very first time.

Start/finish line of the race was in front of the Municipal Gym which is just a few steps away from the town plaza and the Municipal Hall. As expected, many Dole employees came to join the run which have 3 categories: 5K Open; 5K Exclusive for Dole Employees and 3K Female.

The Tri 30+ SPED Run Experience

The Tri 30+ SPED Run I joined last September 1, 2012 was one unique running experience. Unique in the sense that while it was an organized run, it was not a race. It was purely a charity run, the objective of which was to raise money from various sponsors to help renovate the SPED (Special Education) classrooms in Barangay Kalasungay, Malaybalay City.

Organized by the running and biking priest, Father Robert Selecios, the run was originally dubbed as 30-30-30. Supposed to be, only 30 selected runners will run 30 kilometers from Kisolon, Sumilao up to Malaybalay City, with the intention of raising 30,000 pesos for SPED. However, as more runners got interested in joining and even more donations came pouring in, Father Selecios decided to rename this run into Tri 30+ SPED Run.

I Survived Kagay-an Festival Marathon!

At around 2:30 AM, with barely two hours of sleep, I stepped out of Plaza Star Business Hotel in Divisoria and jogged my way towards Rodelsa Circle in Paseo del Rio. It is where the Kagay-an Festival Marathon would start and finish. There, I met and chatted with fellow Malaybalay Runners while waiting for the 42K gun start. Marathoners started to crowd the venue and in a little while a showband started to perform in the makeshift stage. The atmosphere is lively and I could sense everybody's excitement for Cagayan de Oro's first full marathon in recent years.

After the Opening Prayer and Pambansang Awit, we were asked to proceed to the starting area. After some stretching drills and race briefing, the gun start fired off a little past 3 AM. Amidst the fireworks, I started to make my strides with only one goal in mind, to finish my second 42K.

Kagay-an Festival Marathon 2012: My Next 42K

I'll make this short and sweet. This coming Sunday (August 19), I will be running my second 42K in the Kagay-an Festival Marathon in Cagayan de Oro City. After finishing my first 42K in Cebu last January, I never thought the second one would come this soon as I plan to run the distance only once a year. However, I got so inspired and motivated (or maybe just plainly envious.hahaha!) by the 42K finishers during the Dinaganay sa Malaybalay 2012 where I was one of the race photographers. Right after that race, I made up my mind that I will join Cagayan de Oro's first ever full marathon. I only had less than 2 months of training with only 3 "real" long runs but still I hope to have a safe run, a decent finish and hopefully, improve my first 42K time of 5 hours and 45 minutes++.  So wish me luck!

One Fun Run and A Great Adventure Trail

The previous weekend was a blast as I joined back-to-back races in two days: Dagan sa Aglayan on Saturday (August 4) and Panahik Adventure Trail on Sunday (August 5). Both runs were really enjoyable and offered some things out of the usual Malaybalay highway route. The Aglayan fun run started from the San Lorenzo Diakono Sub-Parish and went to as far as the Abohan Bridge in Barangay Managok. On the other hand, the Panahik Trail made us explore the less-visited spots of the Bukidnon Provincial Tree Park and included road and trail running, river trekking and an obstacle course.

My PR 5K at the Barangay 1 Fun Run (Malaybalay City)

Barangay 1 Fun Run was held last Saturday, July 14, in Malaybalay City. I actually thought the run would be cancelled or postponed as the rain was pouring hard by the time I woke up at 5 AM. I went back to sleep, woke up 30 minutes later and still the rain did not subside. I dozed off again and and get out of bed at around 6. The rain has somewhat slowed down and so I called my friend Dax who is part of the organizing committee. He told me that the despite the drizzle, the run would push through as they are already handing out race bibs to the participants.

So my wife Malou and I hurriedly changed into our running attire and motored quickly to the Barangay Hall where the run would start and finish. Luckily, the organizers are still on the process of listing down the numbers of each participants when we arrived so we still have enough time for some warm-up and stretching.  In my own estimate, there are more than 100 participants and surprisingly, some of Malaybalay's elite runners joined in the fun (despite the minimal amount of cash prizes at stake).

1st Sumilao Fun Run 2012: My First Minimalist 5K Run

We heard the gun start a few seconds after we disembarked at the highway bus stop of Barangay Kisolon. Realizing I was already late for the 5K, I told my companion Jun Lite that I would just run in the 3K as we hurriedly run to the starting line. We were met my race organizer, Barangay Kagawad Jim Baula, and was told that it was already the 3K runners that were just sent off!

Ouch! I am late for both distances! Jim handed me my race bib and as I set off, I planned to just catch up with the 3K participants. Since it was the first ever fun run held in Sumilao, a good number of people lined up along the highway to witness the event. I could distinctly hear their chuckles as I, the last of all runners, passed by. Hahaha!!!

Of Natural Running and Minimalist Running Shoes

I've been curious about minimalist running or natural running for some time now. I am a firm believer that natural running is healthier, more efficient and can prevent common running injuries. I am generally a heel striker, or to put it simply, my heel lands first whenever I run. According to experts, this incorrect running form is one of the most common causes of injuries in the long term. I figured out that if I want to be able to run for as long as I can, I need to transition into the proper and natural running form.

Bukidnon Highland Games 2012: Coming Soon!!!

After the successful first Bukidnon marathon dubbed as Dinaganay sa Malaybalay 2012, another important outdoor event will be held in the province on the later part of this year. The Bukidnon Highland Games is poised to become the biggest outdoor event in Bukidnon and probably in the whole of Northern Mindanao this year. The 10-day festivities will feature a variety of outdoor and sports events that I am sure will excite all adventure and thrill-seekers out there. Bukidnon Highland Games will be held on November 30 to December 9, 2012 in selected cities and municipalities of Bukidnon.

Watch out for the details of Bukidnon Highland Games, to be released very soon!

Dinaganay Sa Malaybalay 2012: Bukidnon's First Marathon was a Success!

Dinaganay sa Malaybalay 2012, the first ever full marathon in Bukidnon, was successfully held last Sunday, June 24, in Malaybalay City. The run was sponsored by the City Government of Malaybalay as part of the Araw ng Malaybalay Celebration and was jointly organized by the Office of the City Sports Coordinator and the Malaybalay Runners club.

Much as I wanted to, I volunteered not to run in my home province’s historic first marathon, so I could be of more help to the organizers. I was part of the documentation team and took up the task of taking photos in Barangay Managok which is part of the 42K route. As I motored my way to the area, I already met some of the lead runners in Aglayan and Linabo yet I failed to take decent shots since it was still dark and they ran really fast! It was the middle to rear pack runners whom I caught up with, just in time as the daybreak gave me sufficient light to take my shots.

LKK Freedom Run 2012: Missed Target=New Shoes

Ouch! For the second straight run, I failed to hit my target time! After not being able to finish a sub-one hour 10K in last month's Cosin Summer Run, my attempt to improve my half-marathon time in last Sunday's (June 17) Lim Ket Kai Freedom Run 2012 was another big letdown.

My goal was to improve my previous best of 2:13:30, recorded in last year's Run United Regional Series Cagayan de Oro Leg. However, it was another epic fail as I finished the Freedom Run almost 3 minutes slower at 2:16:22. Aarrggh!!!

Lim Ket Kai Freedom Run: My First 21K for 2012

After more than 5 months into 2012, I am finally back to joining a half-marathon (21K) race. I've recently signed up for this Sunday's Lim Ket Kai Freedom Run 2012 in Cagayan de Oro City. Hard to believe but this will only be my sixth official race this year. Unlike last last year, there have been fewer races in Malaybalay and Cagayan de Oro this 2012 and some of them I missed due to conflicts with my other schedules (such as work, travel, etc.).

Dinaganay Sa Malaybalay 2012: Registration Form, Freebies and Race Route

The organizers of Dinanganay sa Malaybalay 2012 recently released more details on the upcoming June 24 run, dubbed as the first-ever full marathon event in Bukidnon. Among these details include the registration form and freebies, account number for those who wish to participate from outside Malaybalay, prizes, singlet design and race route map.

Unexpected Twist and Meet-Ups at the Cosin Summer Run in Cagayan de Oro

Going to the starting line of the Cosin Summer Run in Cagayan de Oro City last Sunday (May 20, 2012), I was pretty confident that I will achieve Goal # 2 of my running goals for this year: to finish a 10K race in one hour or less with a timing chip on. After all, I already did a sub-1 hour finish (59++ minutes) in the previous week's Fiesta Run in Malaybalay City. I did not consider that an official time though, as the race did not utilized the timing chip technology in recording finish time. However, it gave me enough confidence that I could breeze my way to a sub-1 finish at the Cosin Summer Run since the Malaybalay route has lots of uphill stretches while the Cagayan de Oro route is mostly flat. My belief is that if I could do a sub-1 10K in Malaybalay, then doing it in Cagayan de Oro would be a "run in the park". Or so, I thought.

5 Unforgettable Moments During the Malaybalay Fiesta Run 2012

Before I proceed with another made-up, after run list, here's my brief review of the 1st Malaybalay Fiesta Run 2012 held last Sunday, May 13, at the Capitol Grounds:

In my own opinion, the 1st Malaybalay Fiesta Run 2012 was a well-organized race. There are adequate hydration stations (four, to be exact) which are very important since the route (Capitol Grounds to Brngy. Casisang and San Jose boundary and back) features lots of up-and-down terrain which definitely zapped out the body fluids of all runners. Kilometer and turning point markers prominently displayed were also very helpful.

5 Reasons Why I Love the Earth Day Run 2012

The Earth Day Run 2012 (Dagan Alang Sa Kalibutan) held last Sunday (April 22) in Malaybalay City was only the third organized run I've joined so far this year. After conquering my first marathon in Cebu last January, succeeding runs in Bukidnon and nearby Cagayan de Oro City conflicted with some of my personal schedules so I have to beg off from joining them.

The New Look of Toby's Cagayan de Oro

I was able to visit the Lim Ket Kai Mall in Cagayan de Oro City last week and was pleased to see that Toby's Sports has undergone a major facelift. It is now called Toby's Arena and has a brighter and more spacious interior. Gone was the basketball goal for shooting and its place are more running products and the machine which I believe most runners in Cagayan de Oro and nearby places has been waiting for: Footworx Gait Analysis.

Long Run Surpise in Barangay Can-ayan

"THE JOY OF FINDING NEW ROUTE - Today you took a left rather than a right and suddenly found amazing views and a piece of solitude you never knew existed before now. Then you imagine how many runs there are out there waiting to be discovered." --from Runner's World 49 Reasons to Love Running

It was a Black Saturday morning when I and my friend James headed out for a long run to a route we haven't threaded before. We figured out that running around the Capitol Grounds could get boring sometimes. So we decided to try something different and opted to run to Barangay Can-ayan.

Trail Running with Journeying James at the Bukidnon Provincial Tree Park

Journeying James, one of the Philippines' most popular travel bloggers (he was once featured in GMA 7's Kapuso Mo, Jessica Soho), arrived in Malaybalay City yesterday (April 3, 2012) as part of his epic 100 Days of Backpacking Around the Philippines journey.  I fetched him at the bus terminal and took him to the Capitol Grounds and Kaamulan Park. We then went to D' Stable Eco Resort (Quadra) in Barangay Sumpong where we meet up with fellow Pinoy Travel Bloggers member (and my officemate) Bon of Contour Blog.

My PR 5K at the Kapamilya Run in Cagayan de Oro City

I joined ABS-CBN's Kapamilya Run in Cagayan de Oro City last Sunday, February 26, 2012 with only one goal in mind: to finish 5K in less than 30 minutes. Two blog posts ago, I wrote about my running goals after finishing my first marathon (42 K) in Cebu early this year. Goal # 1 on that list is to finish 5K in less than half hour. While I believe I have achieved sub-30 in two local fun runs in Bukidnon, I could not proclaim the "validity" of my time. On the first run, I forgot to switch on my digital watch timer during the start while on the second run, I completely forgot to wear it! Hahaha!

Kaamulan Half Marathon Top 10 Winners and Photos

Kenyan Jophat Kiptanni with local runners. Photo taken a day before the run. (Photo from Engr. Rommel Abao)

Special thanks to fellow Malaybalay Runner Maria Theresa "Matet" Quirino for giving me the list of winners of the recent Kaamulan Half Marathon held last Sunday, Feb. 19, 2012 in Malaybalay City. I found out that a Kenyan actually won the 21K race with a time of 1:11:05. Jophat Kiptanni, the lone non-Pinoy participant, certainly added "international flavor" to the race. Run champions from the cities of Tangub, Iligan and Cagayan de Oro along with local bets from Malaybalay also comprised the highly competitive field.
